I have left her when we started falling in love. It has happened not once, not twice, but thrice. I hope this time it stays forever.

*****

I still remember the first time I met you. That was the first time I was staying away from home. Among all those strange and unfamiliar faces only you smiled at me. And I had started accepting you in my life. Remember the first time we went to Pizza hut. I was not alone. I was with five other guys, but you were my only companion. I became accustomed to your ways of life. I was gradually beginning to understand that there is life away from home, and was starting to think of settling down. But then I had to leave you. For ‘better’ prospects, as they say.

I wasn’t that disappointed to leave you. I knew I could come back to you whenever I wanted to. And you will accept be as you had done before. But then, my priorities were different. Better Prospects.

Goodbye Mumbai. I will miss you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbKHpVAKr8ehQKtzLaxPmXvy9E0GZcE2UnqSsXDeiEi6RAnJ3qTDy3Zp4bBcjroUWr-NlKbgZ4kNgWN8unZdIbnVVEA8Fk_OGskukWj9WtF2rUeKb09r3ntlMA_uQEqpcKb_3tCg/s320/mum.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495154519490919298" />

*****

The welcome wasn’t a very warm one here. I was seen with suspicious eyes. I didn’t belong to this place. But I was here for a longer time. And I had time to fall in love with you. The best thing was I was now much closer to my home. Home sweet home. I visited my parents every month. And then I came back. Back to your open arms. I explored and started loving you. I was almost decided that my life is gonna be here. If not here then nowhere else. But…

I had many friends here, many relatives to visit. But I stayed here only for you. I stayed here only because I fell in love with you. Everywhere I went I was not lonely, even if I went alone. You were always with me.

Remember all those fabulous movies which we watched together. Remember those hang-outs we had. Remember those outings. Remember those days I spent alone in my room. But you made me feel special. Indeed our relationship was special.

But then there was again a going back. I had other priorities, again. Leaving you was difficult. But this was my chance. I wouldn’t miss it.

Goodbye Bangalore. Someday I would be back.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 298px; height: 226px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivOOzk08WVtN5iFzg0IRuVkxv8so4CIEM8iPD4RiEyEngo4MFpvSwrS5DSo-is0NQ2vxoz-o-bCbl6uX4HKUrMjRd7Q5HexH8uF2EfKhxDSk0UZ_iw_Sfx5hZY2SYJw1IgGRZDZQ/s320/blore.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495153714322656066" />

*****

I was back in Mumbai. This was a new lease of life. But I didn’t want to be here, that’s for sure. But still, I was welcomed with smiles all around. Everyone was happy to have me back here. But I was still long way away from home. That was the biggest downside. This time you looked more beautiful. My life was smoother than ever before. You made it look so easy.

This time I had more time to spend with you, than my earlier stint. I enjoyed each moment with you. Our hangouts were so enjoyable. We sometimes had the company of many famous people, Celebrities. I still have those times spent in Matheran and water kingdom fresh in my memory. Pity that I couldn’t roam around more.

But I always wanted to go away from you. Not because I didn’t like you. But I thought you were too big for me. And then I got my chance. I am leaving you again. This time it will be forever. There won’t be a comeback, I hope. But you are still my first love.

Goodbye Mumbai.
*****

I had never thought I would land up here. This is a place I never wanted to be in. but God’s plans were different. This was indeed a better prospect. I am just getting acquainted with you. We have a lot of time to be spent together. Chennai, I am here.

*****

All these roaming around have made me understand one thing. It is not the place which matters, but the people around me. They are the ones who make me happy. They are the ones who makes me cry. They are the one who makes me live.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-51604215763601535032009-12-25T06:34:00.000-08:002009-12-25T06:37:19.616-08:004 Idiots...The day we went to see the movie 3 Idiots, we became the four idiots. We booked our ticket at one cinema house and in the morning went to another. And by the time we realised our mistake and reached the correct cinema house, we had missed one scene.

3 Idiots...

It has been the trend since 2007. Towards the end of the year Aamir Khan comes out with his movie, and no matter how many hits have been there in that year, you enter the New Year thinking of his movie and his movie only. 2007 was TZP, the next year came Ghajini, and now it is 3 Idiots. 3 Idiots definitely takes over from earlier Raju Hirani movies like Munnabhai MBBS and Lage raho Munnabhai. It has the feel-good factor, reminds us of everything good in the people around us and inspires us to look at life from a different perspective. The movie too emphasises on male bonding, even as the protagonists’ love affair is taken care of. The most distinctive thing about 3Idiots is that apart from all the hirani effects, it has the luxury of having Aamir Khan in it.

Raju (Sharman Joshi), Farhan (Madhavan) and Rancho(AK) are hostel roomies at Imperial College of Engineering. Rancho is a guy who thinks out of the box. Machines are a passion for him. He takes on everything and everybody who comes his way. Raju hails from a poor family, a bright student and Farhan is an aspiring photographer. Rancho falls in love with Piya (Kareena) who happens to be the daughter of their Director Mr Sahasrabudhe, played to more than perfection by Bomen Irani.

The first half of the movie belongs to Aamir Khan. He outshines everyone in the movie. He perfects the character of Rancho, in his actions, reactions and body language. The acting skills of Bomen Irani are unquestionable as proved again in the movie. Madhavan and Sharman play the perfect side-kicks and walks away with some of the best moments in the movie. The scene where Madhavan asks his father permission for pursuing his passion in photography is definitely one of the best. Kareena kapoor has nothing much to do as an actress, but brings in some romance into this otherwise male dominated movie.

Remember the days when people went for ‘jaadu ki jhappis’ after Munnabhai MBBS, or the days when ‘Gandhigiri’ became teh fad of the day. 3 idiots also leave you with a thought to ponder on. ‘All izz well’. Utter this mantra and you can bring in chamatkar. 3 idiots is a movie with a heart. It makes you think, it inspires you and it entertains you like nothing else does.

The only drawback in 3 idiots is that in spite of having a gem of a script, the writers didn’t bother to remove those jokes which are not original. We have heard those from different sources and at different occasions. Take for example, the scene in which the three friends make sure that the exam invigilator does not know them by name or roll number before mixing their answer sheets in to his bundle. Or the scene, where rancho asks his professor why can’t we use pencils in outer space, instead of having spent a humongous amount of money to invent a pen. These are all scenes which we have earlier seen or heard. But even then, these scenes are funny and you laugh your heart out. And the success of the script lies in exactly that. It keeps us indulged.

I will go with 4 out of 5 for raj Kumar hiranis 3 Idiots. How much this movie does justice to Chetan Bhagats Five Point Someone is something I need to find out. Though, I missed thh opening scene, I came out of the cinema a much happier person. As someone said, All izz well that ends well.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-52252401841391049762009-12-20T08:41:00.000-08:002009-12-20T08:42:04.133-08:00Out of this world...The moment I came out of the cinema after watching Avatar, I said to my friend, “holy shit!, we are back on earth!”. That is the kind of experience I have been through for 2 hour 45 minutes odd, watching Avatar. By and large, this is THE most awaited movie of the year. And guess what our wait does not go in vain. Avatar is once in 10 years movie.
The story is as simple as a bollywood romantic masala flick. Rich hero, poor heroine, the rich father attacks the poor heroines family and our hero rescues the heroine and her poor family. Now, how many times have you seen such a storyline in a movie? But avatar is all different. James Cameron has just extrapolated this simple story which anybody can digest. Only thing, he made it humans and aliens -Humans (rich hero and his family) and the Na’vi tribe of Pandora (Poor heroine and family).
The movie set in the year 2154, is about how humans attack the planet of Pandora for mining out a mineral called the unobtaininum. As human beings cannot breathe in Pandora, they send out their Avatars, remotely controlled by them, who mingles with the Na’avi tribe. The protagonist is one such Avatar. Jake Sully is sent to Pandora and soon gets emotionally attached and falls in love with the tribe and helps them out against the human conquest.
The movie has got everything in it. Romance, action, war, drama, special effects, animation, 3D- all at the very best. All credit goes to Cameron for conceptualising and bringing everything imaginable on screen.
Well, I don’t believe that any movie can be given a rating of 5 out of 5. Nothing can be perfect. I would go with a 4.9 out of 5 and a recommended watch/collector’s item stamp for James Cameron’s Avatar. Go watch it, and make sure you watch it in 3D.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-72408539272129041562009-08-19T07:13:00.001-07:002009-08-19T07:16:25.108-07:00@ As far as a movie is concerned, planning would mean a perfect script. That is exactly the winner this week at the box office. Two major releases this week, Kaminey and Before the Rains are wonderfully written movies and that is half the job done.

Kaminey

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey is a movie where the direction, the script and the performances stands tall. The movie is a mix of comedy, drama, romance and action. Add to it some bollywood masala, some fabulous music and what you get is an excellent piece of movie making, which Vishal has excelled in time and again.

Guddu and Charlie are identical twins and each of them has a speech disability. Charlie has a lisp and Guddu stammers. Charlie is a small time bookie and dreams of making big money through some ‘chota fhortcut’. Guddu works for an NGO and has impregnated the local gangster’s sister. Charlie gets a guitar which has got cocaine worth 10 crores which he sees as his path to fulfill his dreams. Guddu lands himself into trouble when the gangster learns about his affair with Sweety. How the two brothers find their way out of the double trouble is worth watching.

Similar to other Vishal Bhardwaj movies, most of the shots in Kaminey are dark. Rarely would you find a scene in broad daylight. The background music and the songs of this movie are really good and keeps the mood alive.

Shahid Kapur as Guddu and Charlie has done more than justice to the characters. He has proved his acting skills again and again, but this ought to be one his most memorable movies. Similarly for Priyanka Chopra, Sweety will be one her best ever performance. Amole Gupte as the local gangster is the surprise package and an outstanding performance.

The thing bad about Kaminey is the climax. It an utter chaos as groups and groups of people come in rushing to claim the coke-guitar. It was really a disappointment to see such a trivial ending to a more serious movie. 3.5 stars for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey.

Before the rains

If it was the script that scored for Kaminey, then it is the cinematography for Santhosh Sivan's Before the Rains. movie. Rahul Bose as TK is an excellent choice as the English speaking villager, though not very convincing at places where he has to deliver Malayalam dialogues. Nandita Das fits perfectly to the role of the house maid. The foreign actors come up with a commendable performance. The Malayalam actors Lal, Tilakan and Indrajit portray their characters very effortlessly.

and breezy and heard-so-many-times love story. However, the script is so weak, that the movie needs to fall up on the acting skills of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone and their chemistry to keep us interested.

Jai and Meera are two career oriented people who date each other for a year before they decide to break up. It takes one more partner for each of them and another year before they realize that they are so deep down into each other that they cannot have a long-distance-relationship.

Another love story which runs parallel to this is between Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) and Harleen (Unknown). This is the love of yesteryears which sounds 'illogical' to Jai.

The best thing about LAK is the performance of the lead actors. Saif has essayed the I've-never-figured-out-what-love-is role umpteen times, that he has perfected the character. His portrayal of Jai is flawless and is the highlight of the movie. Saif's portrayal of the younger Veer is as good as any of his best performances. The clear distinction he brings about to the two characters is worth mentioning. Deepika affirms her place as the actress to look out for in Indian Cinema. She is too good in most of the scenes, especially the one in which she gets drunk and returns home with Saif.

The disappointing factor in LAK is the writing. Nothing is so strong or convincing in the movie. Neither the love stories nor the emotions and not even the pace at which the story moves. Before you realize what’s happening, Meera gets married and breaks up with her husband.

I would go with 2 stars out of 5, for LAK, 1 for the movie and 1 for the performance of the leading pair.
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-55093302906831779392009-07-02T05:40:00.000-07:002009-07-02T05:41:27.751-07:00New York – Worth the Wait…New York which was released after a two month long lull of movies at the multiplexes is worth the wait. It is relevant, intriguing and a recommended watch. The issue it raises is that of the physical and mental torture by the FBI on innocent Asians in America, who were later freed on account of lack of evidence.

The movie begins with FBI arresting Omar (Niel Nithin Mukesh), as they found AK-47s in his taxi. They want him to give information on his college friend Sam (John Abraham) who is a terror suspect. Confident that Sam isn’t into terrorism, he accepts the spy-work and goes back into Sam and his wife Maya’s (Katrina Kaif) life. Omar slowly reveals some shocking truths about Sam and Maya. Roshan (Irfan Khan) is the FBI agent who is in charge of this undercover operation.

The movie has got a point to make and it does that very easily. It brings in to picture, the idea that those who fight terrorism are themselves the ones who foster that. Irfan Khan is excellent as the FBI agent. Niel Nithin Mukesh tries to emote in some of the scenes and at times with success. John and Katrina , as usual will get the credits for their looks rather than acting.

Director Kabir Khan takes the credit for the wonderful treatment of this script. Sans those typical filmi masalas, New York is a recommended watch and a very good movie. I give it a 3 out of 5 for the commendable effort.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-81671668331795226472009-07-02T05:38:00.000-07:002009-07-02T05:40:15.841-07:00Everything happens for the goodThis is a story I heard from someone, don’t exactly remember the guy, but the story continues to remain in my memory and have found myself retelling this at various places, on various occasions and to various people.

“Everything happens for the good “

Once there was a king, who had a very wise minister. One fine morning, as the king was cutting apples, he accidently bruised his fingers.

“Aahhrrgg “, he screamed. The minister, who heard his screams came in, gave the first aid while saying “Everything happens for the good”.

“How dare you say that!!!” the king fumed. “Soldiers, arrest this arrogant man. Put him behind bars.” The minister obliged, smiling and didn’t forget to say “Everything happens for the good”.
Later that day, the king and his close men went hunting. They went inside the forest, deep into it, so far they went into the forest, that they lost their way. The king and 5 of his men were estranged from the rest of the group.

Now, it so happened that these men were in that part of the forest which were inhabited by cannibals. The cannibals caught these men and as the night set in they prepared for dinner. They examined each one of them and took him inside the kitchen to be cut and eaten.

As they were examining, the cannibals noticed that the king had a bruise on his finger. “We don’t eat people who have wounds. Set this man free”, ordered the cannibal chieftain.

After many hours of walking through the dense forest, the king finally found his group who were searching for him. And they reached the palace soon enough.

“What my minister told this morning was true!” the king thought to himself. “Everything happens for the good. If I hadn’t cut my finger this morning, the cannibals would have eaten me!”

He ordered his soldiers to release the minister. The minister was released and brought before the king. “I would like to say sorry for what I did this morning. You were right. But tell me one thing. Even when you were imprisoned you said everything happens for the good. What did that imprisonment bring you?

The minister replied, “If I hadn’t been imprisoned I would also have accompanied you to the forest and the cannibals would have eaten me. “

*********************************************

Now, how many of you believe that? “Everything happens for the good”?Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-91279565579879336782009-03-12T01:50:00.000-07:002009-03-12T01:52:24.324-07:0013 B - Too long for a scary movie…
13 B is a mystery film, far from a horror flick. It stretches for almost 3 hours and bores you like a tele serial. I must say, post interval the film is far more interesting. Madhavan puts in a commendable performance. But there is hardly anything scary about the movie.

Two brothers along with their families move into their new apartment, 13B. Soon, the younger brother, played by Madhavan, notices strange things happening to him. The elevator does not work when he is the only one inside; his camera phone shows up distorted pictures of his when taken from inside the house; and now the big one, a tele-serial which is available only at this apartment and which has characters similar to the ones in his family. He takes the help of his friend to unfold the mystery around the serial. And then there is this blind neighbor who walks around with his pet dog.

13 B is not a bad movie, but it leaves some questions unanswered. If the elevator cannot take him up to the 13th floor, why couldn’t have he gone to the 12th and then taken the stairs? How come that the hero is the only one noticing the similarities between the TV serial and their real life, though it’s the women in the family who are addicted to it ?(Dumb ??) What happens to the blind neighbor towards the end? Was this character brought in, only for the dog walking with him? And the songs were absolutely unnecessary.

Rating : 2/5
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-84760304847297214992008-11-01T05:03:00.000-07:002008-11-19T07:32:40.393-08:00Fashion Faux PasMadhur Bhandarkar’s fashion is boring, predictable and worth a miss. The director doesn’t even show shades of his Page 3 or other movies in this one. It’s just an ordinary film, with a 150% predictable storyline (assuming it had one).

Meghna (Priyanka) is a small town girl who dreams big, of becoming a super model. The film is all about how she (rather, did she ever) achieves her dreams. Shonali (Kangana) is the reigning supermodel. With a ‘kind’ support from the Sarin's (Arbaaz & Suchitra Pillay) and Alisha (Kitu Gidwani) Meghna scales new heights in the industry in no time, and her fall from grace to nothingness also happens as fast. She comes back to her parents, leaving her shattered dreams behind, who encourage her, this time, to find herself back, gain confidence and return to the industry and make it even bigger.

Priyanka Chopra has nothing to emote in the whole movie. She is the biggest disappointment. Kangana Ranaut has overacted each of her scenes. She would better take some acting lessons from someone, preferably not Arbaaz. Kitu Gidwani is the only gorgeous thing in Fashion.

The screenplay is weak, and the dialogues aren’t great. The movie stretches for 3 odd hours without any surprises or turning points. I could even predict some of the dialogues. Even before the characters say it, u know that he’s gonna say this.

Fashion has no comparison with Page 3. While the protagonist in Fashion finds that she has lost herself in the midway, pursuing her dreams, the one in Page 3 realizes herself and understands what she’s got to do towards the end. Fashion may even boast of being realistic and bringing out the behind-the-scenes from the world of modelling, but those were all things, I thought, we knew. It’s nothing new. What Page 3 gave us were chilling revelations.

Arjan Bajwa does justice to his role as the struggling model. He looks good and has got his acts right. The much talked about wardrobe-malfunction picturised on Kangana, is one high point of this film. The situation is very much justified and filmed to near perfection. All of us might remember the one-time-model-turned-beggar episode which were aired on news channels throughout, some time back. Now, here’s a sadistic filmmaker who re-enacts the whole story, in his own way, with good looking movie stars. Nobody goes to movies to see a dramatized version of reality.

All in all, fashion is a damp squib and watch it only if you find no better way to spend time. Definitely not a collector’s item. I would give it a 1.5 star rating.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-66850927241285314522008-10-01T07:39:00.000-07:002008-10-01T07:40:07.514-07:00A heart-warming story...
Welcome to Sajjanpur is a heart warming fable. Watching this movie one feels like having gulped a glass of chilled orange juice after being out in the hot sun for long. It is such a refreshing story, so simple in its narration.

Mahadev is the local village ‘letter-writer’. He writes letters for the literate and the illiterate of the village to earn a living. A wannabe writer, he adds his imagination and emotions into others’ letters. One day his school time crush comes to him to write a letter to her husband working in Mumbai. He manipulates the letters between them so as to win back his love from her husband, until he realizes how much the husband loves her. He proceeds to make amends for his misdoings and also gets one of his novels published later.

Shreyas Talpade’s acting abilities is all well known and the very fact that Shyam Benegal chose him for his movie is an award. The caller asked for the release of the terrorists to get them killed. He represents the ‘stupid common man’, who has anger within him.

Watch this movie for splendid performances from Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and the surprise package Jimmy Shergill. Naseer’s acting is a textbook for budding actors. His dialogue delivery, body language are all just perfect and so real. Anupam kher is strong and confident as the commissioner, and carries off his role to perfection. Jimmy Shergil is the one to watch out for. He is intense and rough as the angry young police officer.

The movie might seem a bit impractical for some, but it is after all fiction. Well, I didn’t get time all these days!! Its not that now I m sitting idle and have lots of time or that I m again promising to blog everyday, every incident and so on. It’s just that I watched the best movie of 2007. And how could I ever miss writing a review on that.

Taare Zameen Par - Cinema at its best

What an experience!! Yes, TZP is not just a movie, it’s an experience. It is one of the most touching films I have ever seen. A modern day classic. It will go down as one of the best in Indian cinema. I already read a review comparing TZP with Pather Panchali. Oh my!!! I m speechless.

This is one movie which could be given a rating of 5 out of 5. I ve no words to describe this movie, nothing to complain about. The performances, script, music, direction are all perfect. The story goes like this:

Ishaan(Darsheel) is a class 3 student who gets marks like 3/25, 4/25 in all the subjects. Punishments are regular for him, everyday, every hour he gets punished by his teachers. He doesn’t know how to write properly, read sentences, and do additions and to behave to others. Fed up of hearing complaints about him from his teachers and neighbors, his father sends him to a boarding school.

Ram Shanker Nikumbh(Aamir) is a temporary art teacher in this school. He realizes that ishaan is dyslexic and he has the patience to spend time with this kid and make him read, write and behave like other children: he is the one who finds out the 'young artist' in ishaan.

The movie ends with a soul-stirring climax with Ishaan becoming - not the best- but a boy who has improvements in every subject in school, thanks to nikumbh sir. Nikumbh is just an ordinary teacher. He’s not the likes of the music teacher in mohabbattein who can encourage his lover students to go for it! He’s not the coach who can make minnows, world beaters. He is just another teacher who understands his students; who loves children.

This was the first time I have seen the audience applaud a movie by standing up and clapping as it ended. Nobody moved from their places, perhaps nobody wanted it to end. People were all speechless!! I m sure there wont be a soul whose eyes did not water during this masterpiece of a movie.

Thank you Aamir, for such a great movie, and thank you for making me believe that movies could be this great. AK has taken Indian cinema to the next level.

Ah!!! The more I talk about TZP, the more I like it. Its is obviously a must watch, also it is a must buy, too!!

So, another year has gone by, and let me pick some of the best of this year

Taare Zameen Par and Chak De! India(CDI) are the best bollywood movies of 2007. Others like Guru and Black Friday are my picks for the best of 2007. Om Shanti Om and Namastey London were the best entertainers of the year. RGV ki Aag and Saawariya will be the disappointments of the year, though I haven seen the later. Other movies which were missed include Metro, Bheja Fry and Dhamaal. Jab We Met(JWM) was the surprise of the year, it gave us the future Mr. and Mrs. bollywood.

Deepika, Sonam and Ranbir will be stars to watch out for. All of them will share the debutante awards. Special Mention for SRK for having started real acting with CDI. Best actress will be Kareena for JWM. Best Director would be AK for TZP. Best music – Shankar, Ehsaan Loy for TZP. Best script Anmol Gupte for TZP. Child artiste Darsheel Safary for TZP.

Those were all my picks, my personal opinion, obviously inspired by Rajeev Masand’s Now Showing (CNN IBN) and a lots of other sources. Have a great year ahead!!!
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-14105219899368203162007-02-14T03:03:00.000-08:002007-02-14T05:07:01.523-08:00Black Friday ...Real Stuff...

A real must watch, Black Friday is a superb movie. It is so real in its making that we could feel the chill in our bones. The film claims to be the real story behind the 1993 Bombay blasts and it really is. The direction is superb, the camera captures the characters and their emotions wonderfully well and the narration is fantastic. Before watching it I thought it would be like a documentary, but the film is sketched beautifully that you never feel so.

A man runs himself into the police and warns them about a conspiracy being planned to rock the financial capital of the country. The police ignores the warning and three days later, hell breaks out in the city, as Bombay is rocked by serial blasts. Now the whole movie is about the frantic search set out by the police and the real story and the people behind the bombings. The film is rated 'A' for the violence it depicts. The blast scenes are horrifyingly depicted, reminds us of some Hollywood stuff. Some of the scenes are kinda ones in which we feel like turning our heads away from the screen. Such is the brutal violence that police uses against the people involved in the bombings.

It’s really chilling enough to watch characters like Tiger Memon, Dawood Ibrahim on screen. These are all people we have read about in newspapers and seen pictures of in television channels. But they are all characters in the movie. Pavan Malhotra as Tiger Memon is a class apart. He is just amazing. The wonderful actor that he is, he carries of this difficult and complex role with ease. KK as the police inspector is one of his great performances. The emotional turmoil he goes through after using third degree against the criminals is enacted very well. All the performances are good, though he actors we see here are not heard-of kinda ones. Also Anurag Kashyap, successfully brings in a bit of comedy here and there which serves as a comic relief, between the gruesome acts shown in the movie. Black Friday is a real must watch and one of the finest films i have seen in recent times.Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1159944722955187422006-10-03T23:49:00.000-07:002006-10-03T23:52:02.970-07:00Kazhcha, Thanmatra and Blessy

It's been a long time since I had watched Kazhcha, and a week ago I watched Thanmatra. I had thought quite a lot about writing on these two movies. To be frank, I haven't liked them. Both of these films are good, both are untold stories, have good performances, but I didn't like the treatment. Somewhere I feel, things should have been made better, there's still room for improvement.

Kazhcha

Kazhcha is the story of a Gujarathi refugee boy, who reaches Kerala following the riots in Gujarat. He may have lost his parents, we don't know. Here, a villager, played by Mammootty, comes to his help. His family treats him like one among them. But in the end they have to leave him to his homeland.

The script is good. But as told before, I didn't like the treatment. It's not gripping. Mammootty is in his usual best, enacting his role with ease. Master Yash too gives good performance as the lost kid. Padma Priya has little to do. Others are as natural as they come in Malayalam films.

Thanmatra

This is the story of family bonding. The bonding between a father and a son, a man and his wife. The story, inspired by Padmarajan's short-story 'Orma', tells us how a family overcomes the challenges when its lone bread-winner succumbs to Alzheimer's.

Mohanlal enacts the role of the Alzheimer's patient wonderfully well. It couldn't be better. Meera Vasudev delivers one of the worst-ever performance by a newcomer in Malayalam. She has no expressions in her face and her dialogue delivery is ridiculously bad. She doesn't fit in to the picture, as such. All other performances are good.

The film is more about family bonding than about the disease. Some scenes are exquisitely well made, but some could have been avoided completely. Those scenes bring the film to a low. Kazhcha doesn't have such scenes. But all characters are very well sketched in Tanmatra. In Kazhcha you have certain characters which could have been avoided.

And now a word about Blessy

He claims to be Padmarajan's disciple. But in the two above films he doesn't show even the slightest hint of this. In Padmarajan movies there would be moments which could make you wonder how wonderfully he sketches human emotions. Padmarajan made 'innale', (if I m right), about amnesia, and here Blessy made 'tanmatra' about Alzheimer's. A striking similarity in both these movies is that the disease is just one single cause which changes the lives of the protagonists in the movie. The film is not about the disease, but what happens in the life of one suffering from the condition.

It's too early for Blessy to be labeled as Padmarajan's successor. He has a long way to go. And I hope he reaches that stage in life where his films would do the talking.

Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1156682066748687162006-08-27T05:33:00.000-07:002006-08-27T05:34:26.763-07:00Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

I would say, thought provoking. KJ's best work till date. He tells about relationships in a very mature, intriguing manner. We are forced to think about what's wrong and what's right even hours after the show.

A word about the characters. Dev (SRK) is the protagonist and the not-at-all-lovable guy (for me) in the story. Dev never deserves any sympathy. He is unsuccessful to the core, failure in everything, as a husband, as a son, as a father and also as a footballer. He is the only reason for their broken marriage. Riya (Priety) is a good wife, daughter-in-law, a mother and a professional. Maya (Rani) is a simple wife. She has her own dreams but has to obey others. Perhaps tats why she married Rishi. Rishi (AB Jr.) is the most lovable guy in the story. He is Maya's hubby and he loves her so dearly. I felt really sorry for the guy. He hasn't done anything wrong in his relationship with Maya. But he is the sole loser. Rishi's father (AB Sr.) is the man who brings everything in the open. He finds out the relationship between Dev and Maya. But he is the one who makes this movie a thought provoking one, perhaps because he has the one thing others in the story doesn't have- experience of living.

Now, the performances. My favorite is Amitabh. He is the star he is. Nobody can match him. Abhishek is really good in the movie. The real surprise. And with this movie I've started to hate SRK, perhaps because his character is such. But he fails to match up with others. Rani and Priety disappoints with their lackluster performances. The music is good and catchy. Dialogues are just what you cud expect from a KJ movie.

The movie makes the statement that if we are not happy in a relationship better we move away from it. After all, all what we need from a relationship is happiness. If relationships start hurting us, we better break it.
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1155696323554811572006-08-15T19:43:00.000-07:002006-08-15T19:45:23.566-07:00Achanurangatha Veedu
The movie is good. The subject it deals with is contemporary. A bold attempt to portray the society of our times, I would say. The story is not what has happened in place x or y. but in many places, many times. But still something is missing. The fizz is not there. To me, Lal Jose is not matured enough as a director for this subject. Or he hasn't delivered to his potential. This could have been made better.

This is a brave portrayal of the sex scandals which were the 'order-of-the-day' in recent times in Kerala. The film is well shot, but still fails to bring out the emotions as it should have done. Salim Kumar has delivered his best performance to date. He shows that he can handle character roles too with ease. All the performances are good by any standards.

The film makes us think about the present state of the system. How corrupt people are! They can stoop to any levels to fulfill their needs. And who is responsible for the plight of such young innocent girls, after all? Is it the 'anti-social' elements of the society? Or is it sheer necessity? It cud be the school authorities, too who are adamant about their 'reputation'. It cud be the parents, who bring loads of responsibilities on to their children and make them helpless. Whatever, the movie is a bold take on the society and kudos to everybody behind this.
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1155607015945849922006-08-14T18:55:00.000-07:002006-08-14T18:56:55.963-07:00I Have Everything, But Still....

I don’t know if everybody feels the same, but I do. I am not happy with what I have in hand, with what I have achieved. "Yeh dil maange more". But what? And why? I don’t know. All I know is that I need kuch extra.

" Mera mann yeh bataa de tu
Kis mod chala hai tu
Kyaa paya nahin tune
Kya doond raha hai tu "

Once upon a time, there was a kid who would get up after much persuasion in the morn, go to school, do his work and come back, get immersed in his books and toys and then go to sleep only to get up again the next day. Those were days when studies used to be his main duty. His books were his best friends. His secret toys were his fav pals. Studying used to be his way of forgetting tensions. When he was scolded, for some reason or the other, he used to find solace in his textbooks and homework. He was most contended with what he was. He always wore a smile around his face. And he was always ready to lend a helping hand to fellow students. He used to be the teachers' favorite. And was the quietest and most well behaved boy in his class.

Now, that the kid is no more a kid, he has grown up, books have ceased to be his companion. He finds comfort in other stuff. Computers have a definite place in his life. Music was, is and always will be his favorite pastime. Only the times have changed, but the kid is no longer happy with himself. Now, I don’t have to tell you that this kid is the very same me. I have all things, as a 24 year old, I could long for. I have good parents, a fab brother, lovable relatives, cousins, good friends, and all the gadgets and gizmos I could have. I now have innumerous ways to kill time. Listening to music, getting hooked to the internet, television, video games, DVD player and what not! Yet, I get bored easily. Still there is something missing.

I wasn’t ambitious at all. All I wanted to do when I finished my pre degree was a Govt job. But I couldn’t think of studying physics or chemistry again. And so I went after computers which I had always loved. Even after graduation in computers I wasn’t into doing a post graduation. But I did, nonetheless. And now that I am on the verge of finishing my PG, I am a bit greedy. I want a lot of money to spend. I have some dreams to chase. Now I want to do something for my family, for my friends and all those around. I want to make thing better around me. I want to make everybody around me happy.

But to make others happy, I should be happy with myself. I should be contented with myself. To believe in others, I should, first of all, believe in myself. So what is it that is missing in me? Or is it that I feel so? Maybe! Things haven’t changed much after all. Still I am the same person who needs much persuasion to get up from bed. I am lazy to the last bone. Of course, books have been replaced with things that are the fad of the day. And what’s wrong in getting hooked to the internet, in watching TV and movies. Nothing! Yes, tats it! I haven’t changed much. I still love music, films and books. I still like to spend time at my home. I am still the same kid whom I was talking about. And if anything has changed, it is for the good. At least I like to believe so. And I am contended indeed, with what I have. What I am today, what I possess is all because of myself. No, I am not taking away others credits. They have done their part. But all decisions have been mine. Whether wrong or not, whether those have led to failure or success, all decisions have been mine. I have nobody to be blamed. Or to be obliged to. What I am , and what I am not is all because of me. What else do I need to be happy?

Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1155388650676842122006-08-12T06:11:00.000-07:002006-08-12T06:17:30.686-07:00Keerti Chakra...The First of its Kind...

Keertichakra is a very brilliant movie. This is by far truly a nationalistic movie, perhaps the first in Malayalam. I don't know of any Malayalam movie which has depicted the life of army men so well.

This morning, when I watched the interview with the director, Major Ravi, I felt here was a man who wanted to tell something through the movie. That was when I decided to watch keertichakra. and I wasn't dissppointed. I cud feel the diretor's passion for cinema as he was talking and he has done a great job. Only he could have made it this well.

Our very own Mohanlal comes of age in this movie. This is the Lalettan I wanted to see. Now the time has come for him to take up roles he hasn't ventutred into, neither has his counterparts. His performance is just fabulous. But, I shud say, he's a bit too fat to be a commando. But, the great actor that he is, he has performed very well.
The tamil actor, who portrays Jay, has done well. Shammi Tilakan's role is worth mentioning. The music is good in this movie. There is a tamil song, a hindi song, which for me is the best in the movie and a Malayalam song too. This film could have been directed by any other, more experienced directors, but none other than Major Ravi could have succeeded in bringing out the emotions so well. The background music is good, the cinematography is good, and by all standards this is a first of its kind movie.
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1154360851292269842006-07-31T08:44:00.000-07:002006-07-31T08:47:31.303-07:00Manjupoloru Pennkutty...
Never on earth did I think that this was such a good movie. Well done Kamal. I am proud of you. Believe me, this is a very good movie. Not like what I read in its reviews. At that time these reviews had made me keep away from theaters where this film was running. But now I think I should have watched it earlier. The performances are good. The direction is superb, after all it's Kamal. And the story has been never heard before. Nobody else has attempted such a story.
This film is the story of a little poor girl, who is sexually harassed by her mother's husband. Yes! You guessed it right. Her father is dead and her mother marries this man. This is the only problem she has and this is exactly what she can't tell others, not even her mother. At last with the help of her friends she decides to kill the man. And whether she succeeds or not, is for you to find out. Believe me, u wont regret having seen this movie.
Apart from the unusual story-line, the film brings out other two important things in life. One, the character of a woman. A woman can stoop to any low to attain what she wants. Just look at how this little girl makes her 'manual uncle' do things for her. This is what women are all about. Don't argue, it is a fact, no matter how strongly you object. This is the truth. Second, it makes us understand the value of mother in the life of a child, especially if it is a girl. Anything you hide from your mother is bound to affect you adversely. And as far as I could say, mothers are the epitome of love on earth. Nobody can love you as well as your mom can. Also, the best person on earth on whom you can confide is your mother. Mother is a child's best friend.
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1149309744549336042006-06-02T21:42:00.000-07:002006-06-02T21:48:36.190-07:00FANAA Fails To Impress…
The good things first. If not for Aamir or Kajol this would have been
a very poor film. Thanks to these great artistes, the film is
watchable. They rise above everything in the movie. If Kajol could
look this beautiful after 5 years of absence, I would have her keep
aloof from films for another 5 years and come back even more
beautifully. The film's music is good. The songs are appropriately
placed; just when we feel its time for a song, it is there. But other
than Chaand sifarish and Mere haath mein, other tunes are all
heard-somewhere tunes, but good.

Apart from these factors, there is nothing notable in the movie. The
script is weak, direction, just average and the dialogues are a bit
too poetic. I watched the whole movie, expecting something miraculous
to happen every now and then, but alas! Nothing moved me. Not a single
scene! The script sometimes feels illogical. How could ever a blind
girl fall for a man within a week? The nuclear bomb element in the
movie is too exaggerated. The reunion of the hero and heroine is too
coincidental. Shiny Ahuja, Tabu and Lara Dutta just didn't need to be
there in those roles. There is not a single good romantic scene and no
patriotic scene or dialogues. I would rate this as the top of the
worst movies of Aamir Khan.

Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1146715892419733472006-05-03T21:11:00.000-07:002006-05-03T23:40:31.416-07:00Now What...?Now that my exams are over, the time has come for me to ask myself - "Now what ? " . The answer - " do my project" .But this again raises another set of how-when-where questions. Anyhow, I am gonna take a week long break before I get involved. And talking about the exams, to be frank , everything was tough. I am not satisfied with what I have done. These days I have only one prayer- " may this be the last university exams I would write, atleast as an MCA student !! " ; just kidding !!!! I think I would make it hands down.

The Perfect Sequel...
I went for Balram v/s Tharadas today. Its good. This is what I call new-age Malayalam movie. Its an all-out Mammootty affair. He enacts the double role with élan. He is arrogant as ever as Balram; stylish and powerful as Tharadas. But all credit goes to the director I V Sasi for having done more than justice to his past super hits. Good fight sequences, trendy cars, and spirited dialogues ( unlike the four-letter words in Shaji Kailas' movies) all add to the movie's charm.

Balram DySP is in charge of a case for which he has to trace old enemy Tharadas. He arrests the don's girlfriend Supriya(Katrina Kais), an actress, and Tharadas comes flying from Dubai. Whatever is unearthed is thrilling, yet predictable. Katrina should better stop acting, as she is a mere showpiece among better actors.

Whatever ! This is the perfect sequel to the hits of yesteryears !!!! But chances are that everybody won't like the movie. "Try your bloody luck !!! "

When it Rains Hard...
I need no better reason, to ascertain that Kamal is my fav director, than Perumazhakalam. What a movie !!! This is one of his best movies I have seen after Madhuranombarakkattu. And the performances of Meera, Kavya and especially Mammukkoya and Salim Kumar are worth mentioning. Nobody except Kamal cud have done justice to this wonderful script.

Razia's (Meera Jasmine) husband, Akbar (Dileep) kills his friend and colleauge Raghu (Vineeth) in Saudi Arabia. And Akbar is to be beheaded as per the Muslim nation's judiciary. Now the only person who can help Razia is Raghu's widow Ganga (Kavya Madhavan).

Meera is simply outstanding as Razia. Kavya shines in the very few scenes she has in the movie. The male characters comes in just a couple of songs and frames. The rain which pours down very often is very beautifully sketched, brings about the mood of the whole movie. I wonder how Kamal could have avoided that from the climax !!!
Praseethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930191511917919404noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27030642.post-1146059796419206962006-04-26T06:54:00.000-07:002006-04-26T06:56:36.426-07:00Here, I am...Today I decided to start blogging.
